Game report from Andrew Simpson - Mustangs Athletics

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs finished their exhibition schedule with a 83-74 win against the UQAM Citadins Sunday afternoon in Alumni Hall.

UQAM stayed close for three quarters with the Mustangs but the inside presence of Adam Jespersen (16 pts, 17 reb) and Andy Wedemire (21 pts, 5 reb) was too much for the Citadins to handle. In total Western had a balanced attack with all five starters in double digits with Marcus Barnett adding 14, Ryan Barbeau 16 and Pete Scholtes having 11 points.

Western finished the preseason with a perfect 5-0 record. The Mustangs will start their regular season on the road on Nov. 5 travelling to Sudbury to face Laurentian. They will then play at York on Nov. 6 before making their home debut against Ryerson on Nov. 12. That game will be at Alumni Hall at 8 p.m.

UQAM started the game in a full-court press and used their quick, aggressive play to hang tough with the Mustangs. Western was able to break the press and led by a slim margin 22-18 after the first quarter.

The battle continued in the second quarter with both teams trading baskets throughout. After a Barbeau steal and layup and a jumper to end the half the Mustangs would have the slight advantage 41-37 at half.
The Mustangs came out stronger in the second half and a thunderous Wedemire two handed slam would extend the lead to seven at 56-49. The lead would stay at seven at the end of three quarters as Western led 63-56.

With the Citadins in foul trouble they could not mount a comeback as Western had their largest lead of the game 77-64 with four minutes remaining. Western would hold on for the victory trading foul shots to end the game 83-74.

Game Day: UQAM 2pm Alumni Hall

Captians Blog #1

Garrett in action last season

All the pieces are coming together. The 2010-2011 season is soon approaching, and 13 players have come together to compete for a national champion come March. As co-captain of our team (aside Ryan Barbeau) I'm excited at the opportunity to lead the squad in what hopes to be a promising season. Unfortunately for me, I have been sidelined for the majority of the preseason, as I am recovering from reconstructive ACL surgery that was performed late last April. I actually bring this to you as I sit in Fowler Kennedy waiting to see the surgeon. I have just passed the 6 month marker, and am hoping to return to action within the next few weeks. Its been agonizing watching our team perform without me. Of course taking in the UWO Mustangs vs. The Kentucky Wildcats was entertaining in August, although it would have been a much greater experience competing against what will surely be a group of future NBA stars.
Aside from an unusual pre season individually, from a veterans standpoint, it's also been a bit unusual seeing so many fresh faces in the locker room. This year we welcome five new rookies to our squad. Peter Scholtes, Quinn Henderson, Nathan DeLoreto, Andrew Vincent, and Drew Hebb. In the past, its been relatively small recruiting classes. One or two players at most. However, with so many young stunners, fresh out of high school the learning curve was somewhat accentuated. Nevertheless, each rookie has progressed nicely and will play a role in our teams success this year. As a result of such a large portion of newcomers, we found it only fitting that they experience how things are done here at Western.
We now set our focus to this upcoming weekend. A tournament at the University of McGill in Montreal. We'll play Queens University, the University of Price Edwards Island (UPEI) , and the hosts McGill. Its an exciting weekend for our squad, as it will be our first CIS tournament. For nearly 8 weeks our team have been beating up on one another in practice, six days a week. I'm sure they will relish the opportunity to finally beat on someone else. These games will be very important for us as we move forward. Not only will it give us a chance to gage where we stack up against other CIS competition, it will give us the opportunity to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses as a unit, and also shake off any rust before OUA east play begins. I now travel from the doctor's office to my first full contact practice. Tonight we will thoroughly prepare for Queens on Friday, followed by reps upon reps of fundamentals which make our team successful. Our journey begins tomorrow at 10am when we will load the bus and head for Montreal. Where our journey ends? Well, that remains to be seen. However we have grouped together 13 like minded competitors all with one goal in mind. A national championship. You can follow us this weekend, and all season long from our facebook page (to join CLICK HERE). Your number one spot for all the action. (Check out the Memorial half court shot) Become a member, and "like" the UWO Mustangs. All the best!
Your Captain, Garrett Olexiuk

The Matt Curtis Experience Blog #2

Matt Curtis
Former Mustang great Matt Curtis '09 with his second blog post. Matt is currently playing for TV Werne in the German pro league.

Gutten Tag (Good Day)
Hello to all in the blog-o-sphere. Hope all is well with everyone and you all enjoyed your thanksgiving dinners. Mine for the first time ever did not consist of turkey, which was a little disappointing, but the schnitzel more than made up for it.
I saw the first pre-season game was a success and it looks as if the hard work of September is paying off. Also saw that half court shot. Pretty insane. Great contest by DY-LAN though, solid D. Hahaha, I can hear him now “Dont hate guy, I played the NICCCCEST D” Also I bet there was a battle between Adam and him for the triple XL shorts before the game too??  Anyways, all that aside, looks as though you guys are on the right track.
Things are going well over here too. We are now 2-2, with a win in our first cup game. This is normal here, we have a “Pokal”, which means cup, and it’s basically a tournament in betwixt (always wanted to use that word) our season. Had a heartbreaker in our last league game. We lost by 1 at the buzzer. Apparently I packed that bad luck with me and brought it over here. It was a good game though, I played pretty well (18 pts 5assist and 4 rebounds). We were down by 13 in the first quarter but battled back and were up one with 5.6 seconds left. The go ahead basket by us was created by yours truly, I had an open look for 3 in the corner. But I saw our guys had the weak side boxed out, SOOO....I STRATEGICALLY shot an airball long, right into our 6’10 centres hands, and he layed it in. Does not show up on the score sheet as an assist, but it was a purple heart kind of play. Nevertheless, they came down and hit some stupid shot and they won.....figures.
We have a monster big game today in Munster. They are league favourites and want to move up a league next year, so it will be an interesting game no doubt. Plus apparently we do not like them, so I will treat them like every other team in the OUA West.
I will attempt to keep you all updated, but between watching CNN (the only English channel) and .......well thats all I do so I will keep you all updated...Take care and continued successes. Good luck today vs Algoma. STAMPEDE!!

Mustangs 85 Algoma 55

Renee Mahoney- Mustangs Athletics

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men's basketball team played tough defence with a lot of small line-ups - missing forwards Garrett Olexiuk. Andy Wedemire and Adam Jespersen - but still pulled away with a 30-point win.

Western won 85-55 at Alumni Hall led by rookie forward Peter Scholtes, a graduate of London's Oakridge Secondary School, who scored a game-high 21 points and added seven rebounds.
Ryan Barbeau (15 points, 6 assists), Dillon Hamilton (10 points) and Brett Lawrence (17 points) were also top contributors for Western.
"Our defensive intensity and effort was outstanding," said Mustangs head coach Brad Campbell. "Many of our guys like Brett, Nathan and Quinn did a great job playing out of position today due to our injuries."

Mustangs 82 Memorial 59

Game report - Andrew Simpson - Mustangs Athletics

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men's basketball handled the Memorial Sea-hawks 82-59 Thursday night at Alumni Hall in London, Ont.
Western used strong defence and dominated in the paint and on the boards outscoring Memorial 40-16 in the paint and 21-5 on second chance points.
The Mustangs had a balanced scoring attack with four players getting to double digits in points. Ryan Barbeau lead Western with 18 points and added four assists and a couple of steals. Quinn Henderson added 15 points with some excellent three-point shooting and picked up 8 rebounds.
Western will continue their preseason on Saturday, Oct. 16 as they take on Algoma University. Game time will be at 4 p.m. in Thames Hall.
The Mustangs were able to double up the Sea-Hawks 24-12 after the first quarter by using their height advantage and outscoring Memorial 12-2 in the paint.
Western held their double-digit lead for most of the second quarter playing tough defence and winning the rebound battle. The Mustangs lead never dipped as low as twelve but the play of the half would be a ridiculous jumping underhand buzzer beater from Memorial's Tyree Haley. The three would count and Western lead 39-24 at half.
The Mustangs would extend their lead after the half to 20 behind some hot shooting. Western would shoot 13 of 18 in the third quarter and lead 67-47 entering the final frame.
Using their full bench the fourth quarter was a bit slow with the final outcome already being clear. The Mustangs continued to play good defence limiting the Sea-Hawks to just 12 points in the frame to win 82-59.

Doug Hayes Service

Doug Hayes, Brad Campbell, Bob Gage, Craig Boydell & Jerry Gonser

The Doug Hayes service this afternoon at Westview Funeral Home in London was an emotional celebration and tribute. Several speakers spoke about the Mustangs Legend including former Mustang Pete Vandebovencamp who travelled all the way from Belgium to attend.  After the Funeral home service a reception at Aroma's Restaurant took place where many mingled to tell stories and talk about their memories of Doug.  It was great to see so many in attendance. Doug you will truly be missed.
