Barbeau & Higgins Selected For OUA West Awards

HAMILTON, Ont. – Ontario University Athletics (OUA) is pleased to announce this year’s men’s basketball west division All-Stars, sponsored by Wilson Sports. The major award winners will be announced tomorrow, March 2, at the Wilson Cup awards breakfast in Waterloo, Ont.

Only one player returns from last year’s First-Team and that is Laurier’s Kale Harrison(Stratford, Ont.). This is Harrison’s third appearance on the First-Team in his career. The fifth-year forward netted 401 points this season, second most in OUA, and finishes his career third in all-time scoring with 1,918 points. He also accumulated 133 total rebounds and finished tied for fourth with 20 blocks on the year.

 

Lakehead’s Venzal Russell (Detroit, Michigan) earns his first nod on the First-Team after leading the No. 2 Thunderwolves in scoring with 347 points, good for tenth in OUA. The fourth-year arts student converted on 140 field goals, placing him fourth in the league. Russell was also instrumental in creating opportunities for the offence as he tallied 52 steals.

 

The west division leading scorer, Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.), has been named a First-Team All-Star. Barbeau finished the year with 483 points and averaged 24.15 points per game for Western. Barbeau battled through injury the entire season, and despite missing two games, his 483 points was the most in OUA play.

 

Another statistical leader, Windsor’s Lien Phillip (St. Mark’s, Grenada) moves up from last year’s Second-Team to earn his first appearance on the First-Team of all-stars. Phillip dominated the glass this year, totaling 264 rebounds, over 75 more than the next closest rebounder. His 6-foot-8 frame helped him bring down 78 offensive and 186 defensive boards, tops in both categories. Phillip also registered 19 blocks this season.

 

Cracking the all-star list for the first time in his career is McMaster’s Victor Raso (Hamilton, Ont.). The third-year guard averaged 13.79 points per game and 5.68 rebounds per game this season. He also found his teammates for 50 assists and finished third in OUA with an 88.5 completion percentage from the free throw line.

 

The Lakehead Thunderwolves have two representatives on this year’s Second-Team of all-stars. Guard Ben Johnson (Pictou, N.S.) finished the year with 271 points and consistently knocked down three-pointers, finishing second in OUA with 60 of them. He also finished second in three-point field goal percentage, at 54.6 percent. Johnson’s prowess behind the arc is even more evident as his 60 three-pointers accounted for three-quarters of his total made baskets. Joining Johnson on the Second-Team is Greg Carter (Ottawa). The fourth-year guard notched 9.41 points per game and dropped 111 assists for a fourth-best average of 5.05 assists per game this season.

 

Also appearing on this year’s Second-Team is Laurier’s Maxwell Allin (Chatham, Ont.). The third-year guard rounded into form this year at both ends of the court. Allin finished the year with 332 points, a fourth-best 110 defensive rebounds, and 119 assists for a third-best 5.41 assists per game average. Daniel McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) of the Guelph Gryphons lands on this year’s Second-Team after being a First-Team All-Star a season ago. The fourth-year guard finished with 132 rebounds and fifth in league scoring with a 17.55 points per game average. Third-year guardJosh Collins (Thornhill, Ont.) of the Windsor Lancers earns his first all-star recognition on this year’s Second-Team after finishing the year with 298 points and leading the league in assists with 131 and steals with 57.

 

The McMaster Marauders have two freshman named to the west All-Rookie team. Adam Presutti (Oakville, Ont.) finished the year with 243 points, collected 75 rebounds, and led the Marauders in playing time while teammate Aaron Redpath (Oakville, Ont.) also finished with 243 points while also posting 60 rebounds and 71 steals.

 

Completing the west All-Rookie team is Laurier’s Will Coulthard (Oakville, Ont.), Windsor’sRotimi Osuntola Jr. (Windsor, Ont.), and Western’s Ryan Higgins (Fergus, Ont.). Coulthard saw significant playing time at the point guard position for the Hawks in his rookie campaign which helped balance the Laurier offence. Coulthard tallied 157 points and 65 assists on the season. Rotimi Osuntola Jr. scored 208 points for the Lancers while also registering 20 blocks, placing him fourth in OUA. Western’s Higgins averaged 7.90 points per game this season while averaging 27 minutes of playing time. He also brought down 86 rebounds in his first year.
