Men's Basketball Powerhouse OUA East teams hand Mustangs first two losses of season Nov. 13: Ottawa 87 Western 76 Nov. 15: Carleton 80 Western 72 By Andy Watson OTTAWA - Western played a strong game but ran into foul trouble with forwards Andy Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.) and Garrett Olexiuk (Burlington, Ont.) as the Carleton Ravens defeated the Western Mustangs 80-72 in men's basketball action Nov. 15 at the Ravens' Nest. With the win, the Ravens remain perfect, while Western falls to 2-2. Junior point guard Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) led Western with 24 points. "I thought we played good enough to win," said head coach Bradley Campbell. "Even with both Andy and Garrett in heavy foul trouble the whole game, we battled and executed well." The Ravens had a good start against the Mustangs, led by a big forward presence from veteran Kevin McCleery (Ottawa) in the paint. He scored 16 of the Ravens' 35 first half points. The Mustangs entered halftime trailing 35-25. Carleton continued to feed the ball into the post in the second half of play, exploiting Western's foul issues, but shots just would not fall for host Ravens. Solid Ravens defence kept the Mustangs scoreless for the first four minutes of the third quarter. But Western would come back strong to get it within two points, 52-50, the closest they would get all game, by the end of the third quarter. The Mustangs outscored the Ravens 25-17 in the quarter. In the fourth, junior Ravens' guard Elliot Thompson (Fredericton, N.B.) drained back-to-back threes to give the Ravens a six-point advantage. Then Thompson soared through the air to intercept a Western pass, scoring on an open layup on the other end of the court. Manigat was Carleton's leading scorer with 23 points while McCleery added 21 points in the victory. On Nov. 13, Western fell 87-76 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Warren Ward led Ottawa with 30 points, while Marcus Barnett led Western with 24. The Mustangs trailed by 13 points at the half after Ottawa exploded for 49 first-half points. Western hosts Queen's Nov. 21 (3 p.m. Alumni Hall) and RMC Nov. 20 (8 p.m. Alumni Hall).
