Mustangs Round-up from Andy Watson - Mustang AhtleticsWESTERN MUSTANGS WEEKLY ROUNDUP (Nov. 2-8, 2009) Men's Basketball Balance leads Mustangs in dominant pair of wins over OUA East opponents Nov. 7: Western 94 York 61 / Nov. 6: Western 78 Laurentian 53 By Andy Watson LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs held Laurentian to just 18 first-half points en route to an 78-53 win in their first game of the 2009-10 regular season on Nov. 6 at Alumni Hall. Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) led the Mustangs with 18 points along with four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Andrew Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.) also had 18 points, adding eight rebounds for Western. Garrett Olexiuk (Burlington, Ont.) had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the host squad. The Mustangs jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Matas Tirilis (Mississauga, Ont.) responded with the Voyageurs first points. Western built a 17-7 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter, employing a simplified but effective attack. Defence was the story though. Western led 24-15 after the opening quarter and held Laurentian to just three second-quarter points. Western stretched the lead to 36-18 before rookie Dillon Hamilton (Vancouver, B.C.) drained a three to make it 39-18 with just under five minutes left in the half. The Mustangs led 49-18 at the half, holding the Voyageurs to 22% shooting from the field. Wedemire led the way with 16 first-half points while Barbeau had 12 points, four assists and two steals. In the second, Western's lead was cut to 57-29 midway through the third quarter, and the Mustangs led 66-37 after three quarters. The Mustangs used a steady flow of bench support in the second half and held on for the win. A day later the Mustangs improved to 2-0 win a 94-61 win over the York Lions. Western hit eight three-pointers in the opening half and led 47-29 at the break. Wedemire led Western with 24 points, three steals and eight rebounds, while David Harder (Denmark) had 10 rebounds and eight points for the Mustangs. Barbeau had 14 assists along with nine points, while Olexiuk had 11 points and five boards in just 14 minutes of play in the first half. We was injured and cut and had to leave the game after being struck in the face and required stitches. He is expected to return for the trip to the nation's capital to face Ottawa (Nov. 13, 8 p.m.) and Carleton (Nov. 15, 3 p.m.)

Western 94 York 61
The Mustangs defeated York University 94-61 yesterday in their second straight home game and are now 2-0 in OUA league play. Garrett Olexiuk did not play in the second half due to a mouth injury. " We had a good weekend. Defensively we did some good things. Hopefully we can use these games as positive momentum" Coach Brad Campbell

Western 78 Laurentian 53
The Mustangs defeated Laurentian University 78-53 in their first league game of the season. Coach Brad Campbell was happy with the players performance last night; "We came out focused and intense defensively." A great start to the season. Up next the Mustangs take on York University at Alumni Hall @ 3pm today.

UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL: Two-time defending OUA West champions focus qualifying for playoffs in rebuilding year in tough division
LONDON, Ont. - It would take an exceptional year for the Western Mustangs to return to the CIS National Final 8 tournament for a third consecutive year. For the Western Mustangs making - and competing in - the post-season is the task at hand.
In what will be a highly competitive OUA West Division once again, the Western Mustangs lose four starters and will have to rely on rapid development of quality recruits to be in the mix again for an OUA West Division title.
Gone are guards Matt Curtis and Alex Brzozowicz and forwards Brad Smith, Colin LaForme and Keenan Jeppesen. The latter is playing his fifth and final season at McMaster.
"Mac and Windsor will be at the top of the league this season," said head coach Bradley Campbell, entering his fourth season. "Our goal is simple, to make the playoffs."
Returning forwards Garrett Olexiuk (Burlington, Ont.) and Andy Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.), and guard Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) will immediately be thrust into leadership positions.
"Garrett and Ryan are still young and developing and now have new roles this season," Campbell said. "Andy continues to be a reliable scorer who is a potential all-star in our league. These three will lead us this season."
"Our greatest strength this year will be versatile forwards Garrett and Andy," Campbell said. "Our biggest area of concern is our depth."
The new point guard will be Barbeau who has shown flashes of brilliance at the collegiate level. Now in his third year, the winner of multiple OFSAA championships at Nicholson Collegiate will take over for Curtis as the quarterback of the Mustangs offence.
Jason Milliquet (Sarnia, Ont.), who split duties between football and basketball last year, is fully concentrating on the hardwood in 2009-10.
Newcomers include freshman guard Zack Angus (Burlington, Ont.) and senior guard Marcus Barnett (Hampton, Va.) and forward David Harder (Gentofte, Denmark).
Senior guard Brett Lawrence (Welland, Ont.) will be expected to take a bigger role with the Mustangs in the 2009-10 campaign, while forward Josh Windsor (Hamilton, Ont.), who sat out the 2008-09 season, will be an experienced freshman.
Other rookies include freshman forwards Josh Robertson (Vancouver, B.C.) and Greg Edelsward (Burlington, Ont.).
Adam Jespersen (London, Ont.), who was at Hawaii and chose not to stay with the Carleton Ravens program, will redshirt at Western this season. The 6'7, Beal Raiders product is expected to make a major impact with the Mustangs in 2009-10.
With the starting five likely changing game to game, Campbell knows this year will test his coaching ability.
To start, the Mustangs will face two young, solid programs in Laurentian, coached by a young, rising talent in Shawn Swords, and York, coached veteran bench-boss Bob Bain.
