THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Leading by four coming out of the half, the Lakehead Thunderwolves poured in 28 third-quarter points and outscored visiting Western by 15 in the frame to win their second game in consecutive nights over the Mustangs – this time an 87-66 decision.
Venzal Russell scored the first 10 points of the second half, including a pair of three-pointers to turn a four-point advantage into 14 points before the Mustangs got their first bucket of the third quarter. Ahead 64-45 after three, the Wolves cruised from then on to the 21-point point win.
Russell led the Lakehead offense, pouring in 25 on 10-of-17 shooting. Joseph Jones scored 16 points off the bench, including notching a trio of three-pointers. Greg Carter had 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Western’s Peter Scholtes, meanwhile, exploded for 35 points to lead all scorers on the night. The second-year forward went 5-for-6 from three-point range and 13-for-23 overall while also adding five rebounds. Jermaine Bernard was the only other double-digit scorer for the Mustangs, as the rookie guard tallied 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting.
Ryan Barbeau sat out the game due to injury. Quinn Henderson also missed the game due to illness.
Lakehead shot 49.2% (32-for-65) overall, including 42.3% (11-for-26) from three-point range. Western was 40% (24-for-60) from the field, and 50% (10-for-20) from beyond the arc.
