Wedemire (Sarnia, Ont.) was a perfect 14/14 at the charity stripe and finished with 24 points as the Western Mustangs won their second straight game 85-72 over the Queen's Gaels in front of over 200 fans on Nov. 21 at Alumni Hall.In a game featuring five lead changes and five ties, Western blew it open with their starters in the second half, outscoring Queen's 26-14 in the third quarter.
Wedemire added eight rebounds and four assists, while Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) had 24 points, nine assists and two boards.
"Andy's successful at the line," Barbeau said. "Any time we can get him there often, we know we're going to win games."
Garrett Olexiuk (Burlington, Ont.) added 12 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
"It's big for us to go 4-2," Barbeau said. "Now we're in a position to win two more, especially coming off two losses, it's really important."
Senior forward Mitch Leger (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaels with 20 points and 13 rebounds along with three blocks and a steal. But he was 8/22 shooting as the Gaels shot under 40% in the second half.
But Queen's clawed close in the second quarter, outscoring Western 21-17. They trailed by just one, 41-40, at the half.
"We started to give them open looks," Barbeau reflected. "But we tightened up at contested their looks. We made the shots difficult."
Barbeau hit a clutch trey in the third quarter following up on another from Marcus Barnett (Hampton, Va.), who finished with nine points, to blow the game open.
It capped a 12-0 Western run, starting in the dying seconds of the first half.
While the Gaels' depth was excellent - outscoring Western 36-9 in bench points - they shot the ball poorly including five misses on their last seven shots from the field.
Western also made Queen's pay for sloppy play, notching 26 points off turnovers, including 11 in the third quarter.
The Mustangs now prepare for a pair of road games to close the 2009-10 portion of the schedule in Toronto - Nov. 27 at Ryerson at 8 p.m. at Kerr Gymasium and Nov. 28 at 8 p.m. against the Varsity Blues at the University of Toronto.
"They are two high-scoring teams and they'll bring it for 40 minutes," Barbeau said. "We'll have to be ready."
