A 20-point lead at the half was too much for the Laurentian Voyageurs to overcome, as No. 6 Western won its first game of the regular season, 76-60, at Ben Avery Gymnasium in Sudbury, Ont., on Friday night.
Andy Wedemire had an 18-point, 13-rebound performance to lead the Mustangs. Ryan Barbeau had a game-high 19 points along with four assists and a steal, while rookie Peter Scholtes added 16 points in his OUA debut.
Building a 44-24 halftime lead, Laurentian made a game of it in the second half as the Mustangs ran into foul trouble.
The Voyageurs cut the lead to 62-50 after the third quarter.
And on the first possession off the fourth quarter, they reduced the margin to 10 points after a controversial possession call went in Laurientian's favour.
But Wedemire took over, restoring Western's commanding lead, scoring basket after basket to stretch the lead to 69-52 and put a nail in the Voyageurs' coffin.
Western held the host Voyageurs scoreless for the next five and a half minutes and held on to win by 16 points.
The Mustangs led 74-52 before they got into foul trouble and allowed Laurentian to go on a brief run to close out the game.
Western plays at York (0-1) on Saturday night at 8 p.m. Watch live at www.ssncanada.ca.
