Playoff implications as Mustangs host first-place Lakehead

Report by Andrew Simpson - Mustangs Athletics

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs head into the final weekend of the regular season with a doubleheader against the top team in the OUA West. The Mustangs will host the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. in Alumni Hall.

The Mustangs will honour their seniors on Saturday night as Andy Wedemire, Marcus Barnett and Brett Lawrence are set to graduate.
The Mustangs, currently at 10-10, sit a half game back of McMaster at 11-10 for fourth place in the OUA. McMaster dropped a close game 77-73 with Windsor on Feb. 16. A fourth place finish for the Mustangs would mean they would host the quarter-final playoff matchup.
Western will have to win while up against the stingiest defence in the OUA West. Lakehead has been giving up just 66 points per game this season, while the Mustangs average only 74.8 points per game.
Wedemire, who's 18.3 points per game put him at third in the OUA, and Ryan Barbeau will be turned to for some offence this weekend. Barbeau has averaged 15.4 points and 4.3 assists while shooting 87.1% from the free throw line, third in the OUA.
The Mustangs will make the playoffs but this weekend will determine which seed they finish in and whether or not they will get a home playoff game.
