The Western Mustangs men's basketball team is happy to announce the commitment of Jermaine Bernard, of Toronto, to the incoming 2011-12 recruiting class.

Bernard, a 6'1" point guard, played this past season at Holderness Prep school in New Hampshire, where he averaged 14 points and seven assists per game. Bernard received interest and offers from a number of NCAA Division I and II schools, as well as other CIS programs before ultimately choosing Western.

Bernard will be enrolled at King's University College and pursue a degree in Economics in the fall.

"I feel very excited about the opportunity to play for coach Campbell and be a part of his basketball program. Western has proven that it is an environment for a student-athlete to really excel in school and on the basketball court," Bernard said.
"Coming from Toronto, it's great to get such an incredible opportunity that is so close to home. I hope that I will be able to make an immediate impact and help the program in the years to come."

Prior to playing at Holderness Prep, Jermaine was the point guard at Oakwood high school in Toronto. He was named a regional all-star as he helped his team to the 4A OFSAA championship.

Head coach Brad Campbell is enthusiastic about the contributions Bernard will make on both sides of the ball.
"We are very pleased to welcome Jermaine to the Purple and White. Jermaine is a talented point guard who comes to us from two outstanding programs, Oakwood high school in Toronto and Holderness Prep in New Hampshire," Campbell said.

"Jermaine's strengths are his ability to defend and break down defences to help create shots for teammates. We expect him to make an immediate impact."

Bernard will join a strong list of other Western Mustangs commits including Greg Morrow (6'3 Guard, London, Ont.), Charlie Drouin (6'5 Forward Oakville, Ont.), Ryan Higgins (6'4 Guard, Fergus, Ont.), and Larry Blyth (6'5 Forward, Langley, B.C.).
