The athletic history at The University of Western Ontario covers a wide range of sports spanning well over 100 years. Between 1935-72, Western’s athletes prospered under the guidance of JP Metras as coach and athletic director. To preserve his legacy and Mustang history, the JP Metras Sports Museum opened in Alumni Hall. Beginning in 1978, the university's centennial year, the W Club used this room to establish Western's Sports Hall of Fame. Display cases and photos were mounted to help define the space, and coaches became curators, collecting pictures and changing displays. Now, roughly 148 Hall of Fame photos line the hallways leading to the museum, where over 100 pictures are on display between the national championships wall and the Molson Wall of Fame that recognizes Western's Olympic and Commonwealth Games athletes.

The preservation of sports memories and memorabilia reflects the importance attributed to it by the university community and community at large. The spirit of Mustang athletics reigns strong with students and supporters making signs, sporting purple and white, filling the stadium stands, andchanting and cheering “Cananny, cananny, cananny, canoo, It’s hulluba, hulluba, hullubabo! Rickety, rackety, rackety, roo, High up, Sky up, Western U!”

Using materials from the museum’s collection and Western archives, this website takes visitors through the people, places, and events that established the university’s athletic tradition. There are several ways to explore the website. Visitors can browse exhibits on basketball, cheerleading, football, men's athletics, Olympians, women's athletics, and wrestling. Visitors can also search through items andcollections for a quick view of the materials and artifacts. Historically, much attention has been devoted to the Mustang basketball, football, and wrestling teams, as is reflected in the general scope of the collections at the museum and university archives. Even with these limited resources, the greatest effort has been made to represent all women’s and men’s sports.
