Mustangs Season Ends With Loss To Windsor

Story by Mustangs Athletics

WINDSOR, Ont. – With a 79-64 win Saturday, the Windsor Lancers dashed the playoff hopes of the Western Mustangs men’s basketball team, who were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss.

BOX SCORE

The Lancers built up an 11-point lead at halftime and never looked back en route to the win, which improved their record to 15-7 on the season – good for fourth place in the OUA West.

Lien Phillip led the Windsor men with a double-double – 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Enrico Di Loreto had 16 points and four rebounds, while Rotimi Osuntola Jr. had 13 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Peter Scholtes led the Mustangs with 20 points on 9-of-19 shooting, while Ryan Barbeau had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Quinn Henderson also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points to go along with six rebounds.

The Lancers shot 45.6% overall on Saturday compared to a 43.3% mark by the Mustangs, who struggled once again from three-point range (6-for-22). Windsor outrebounded Western 41-33 on the day, and the Lancer capitalized on 12 steals (and 22 total Mustang turnovers).

Path to playoffs an unlikely one
UNIVERSITY MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Western Mustangs men's basketball team is hanging on by its fingernails.
It couldn't be any clearer what they need to survive.
The Mustangs need to beat the Lancers in Windsor on Saturday. At the same time, they have to hope the Brock Badgers lose their final game and the Guelph Gryphons lose their final two.
It's the only way they'll make the Ontario university playoffs after a 90-79 loss to the McMaster Marauders on Wednesday night at Alumni Hall.
As Mustangs coach Brad Campbell was walking to talk to his team, he kicked out the plug that ran the air compressor keeping the giant inflatable M pumped up. It started to deflate quickly.
It's how the Mustangs felt.
"We have no more options. We have to win Saturday and hope for a lot of help," Campbell said.
It was a night when the Mustang youth really showed. They made a lot of mental mistakes and the Marauders took advantage of them.
"We didn't shoot well from outside and gave them too many easy baskets," Campbell said.
The Mustangs are 8-13 after the loss and play the 13-7 Lancers. Guelph could well lose both games heading to Thunder Bay to play the first-place Lakehead Thunderwolves. But 9-12 Brock plays 5-15 Waterloo.
A lot of cards are going to have to come up right for the Mustangs to extend their season.
The Mustangs scratched and clawed to the end against the Marauders. But their defence failed them, especially in the second half, when they gave up too many easy shots and layups against a much better team. The Marauders are 16-5.
The Mustangs only hit on 4-of-18 from three-point range and were outrebounded 53-40 by the Marauders.
Cam Michaud led the Marauders with 23, while Aaron Redpath had 18.
Ryan Barbeau, playing his last game at home as a Mustang, had a game-high 34 points. Peter Scholtes added 13.
Barbeau was his usual competitive self, playing virtually 40 minutes. Usually a senior is pulled so that he can leave to the applause of the crowd, but Barbeau played to the end. No doubt the Mustangs hope he could throw up a trio of lightning bolts to make the game a little closer.
"For four years, I've seen guys leave. Now it's me," Barbeau said. "It feels really weird."
It's been a tough season for the Mustangs. Youth and injuries have made it tough to find any consistency.
Aside from a win against Windsor, the one thing Campbell would like to see Saturday is continual growth.
"Our last game, I want to see a little more progression," he said. "I want to see a little more of the details of the game plan getting executed. To take us in the right direction for next season.
"Just do those little detail things we talk about day in and day out to make us better."
The Mustangs only graduated Barbeau as a regular player.
They had eight first-year players on the roster.

Despite Barbeau's 34 points, Western drops 90-79 decision

By Mustangs Athletics

The Western Mustangs nearly pulled off an upset that would have sent ripple effects through the OUA playoff outlook, but could not quite get over the hump in a 90-79 loss to the visiting Marauders of McMaster University. On Senior Night, Ryan Barbeau led all scorers with 34 points.

After playing to a 19-19 tie to end the first period, the Mustangs slow began to build a lead early in the second period until a late-period run put the Marauders up by seven. With 17 ticks remaining on the clock, McMaster’s Adam Presutti nailed a 3-pointer but Barbeau answered right back seconds before the buzzer with a trey of his own. At the half, the Mustangs faced only a 44-40 deficit.

After trailing by as many as 12 points in the third period, the Mustangs fought back to within four points thanks to a Charlie Drouin layup and a subsequent 3-pointer from Barbeau pulled them to within points of the lead. However, a string of Western missed foul shots and turnovers through the remainder of the game saw McMaster’s lead swell to as much as 15 in the waning minutes of the game.

Western’s Quinn Henderson provided 10 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Peter Scholtes dropped in 13 points of his own. Despite shooting nearly 50-percent in both halves, the Mustangs were cold from beyond the arc, hitting only four of 18 attempts.

The University of Western Ontario will be in action again on February 18th when it travels to Windsor for a 4:00pm tipoff.

The Mustangs will play their biggest game of the season Wednesday as they continue their fight for a playoff spot. The Western men come into the game tied for the sixth and final playoff position in the OUA West with the Guelph Gryphons. Wins are crucial for the Mustangs at this point, but they won't come easy. McMaster heads into Wednesday's game with a 15-5 record and looking to move up a spot to second in the West. The Marauders are red hot, having won each of their last six contests, most recently an 87-79 decision over Guelph on Saturday (Feb.11). Last Wednesday (Feb. 8), McMaster handed Western a 77-63 loss in Hamilton. On Saturday (Feb. 11), the Mustangs bounced back to earn a come-from-behind 105-102 win in overtime over the Waterloo Warriors on the road.

Ryan Barbeau had a career day Saturday, scoring 46 points in the Western win. He enters Wednesday's game as the OUA's leading scorer at 23.9 ppg. Victor Raso is McMaster's leading scorer this year, averaging 13.8 ppg (while adding 5.7 rpg). He missed the Marauders' last game, however, and his status is uncertain for Wednesday's game. McMaster is shooting 41.7% overall on the year, while Western is at 43.5%. The Marauders hold a narrow edge from three-point range -- 34.5% to the Mustangs' 33.7%. Wednesday's game should feature a lot of three balls, as both teams throw up plenty of shots from beyond the arc (Western is 3rd and McMaster is 4th in the CIS in 3-pt. attempts per game). One key area for the Mustangs will be preventing the Marauders from grabbing rebounds on the offensive glass. They currently rank 6th in the CIS in that category, hauling in 14.2 offensive rebounds per game.

Stangs’ seasons on line

One is hanging on by its finger tips. The other is in a battle that could see it earn a home game in the playoffs or miss the playoffs entirely.
The last two games of the season will determine the fates of the Western’s basketball teams.
The women’s team controls its own destiny. With McMaster and Windsor on the schedule, a pair of wins will assure Western of a playoff spot, and perhaps home court advantage. A pair of losses could eliminate them.
The Mustangs are tied with McMaster at 10-10 in fourth place in Ontario university West play. The top six teams make the playoffs. Guelph and Lakehead are in sixth and seventh at 9-11. The game Wednesday at Alumni Hall against McMaster is massive. With No. 2-ranked Windsor being the final game of the season, the Mustangs need a win against Mac. McMaster beat the Mustangs a week ago. A split means any tiebreaker goes to point differential.
Guelph and Lakehead play each other twice. Western holds the tiebreaker against Guelph, having beaten them twice but Lakehead holds the tiebreaker against Western.
The women stayed in the hunt with a 75-64 win over Waterloo Saturday.
Laura Dally had 21 to lead Western with Jenny Vaughan adding 17 and Katelyn Leddy 15.
The men’s team had to stage a huge rally in Waterloo.
Down by 17 points in the third quarter and by five with 25 seconds left, the Mustangs got a buzzer-beater from Greg Morrow to send the game into overtime before emerging with a 105-102 win.
The architect of the win was guard Ryan Barbeau. The OUA’s second-leading scorer had a career-high 46 points including 11 in overtime. He added six rebounds and eight asssts.
Mustangs coach Brad Campbell called it one of the “most incredible individual performances I have ever seen.
“It wasn’t just the number of points but some of the shots he made — the degree of difficulty was unbelievable,” Campbell said. “He also had a lot of assists. He was almost in every basket we made in the second half.”
Morrow finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs need to keep winning. They are tied with Guelph for sixth place, the final playoff spot at 8-12 but they must finish ahead of the Gryphons because Guelph holds the tiebreaker advantage.
Brock is fifth at 9-11. If Western can finish tied with Brock, Western holds the tiebreaker advantage.
Guelph has a tough road ahead as well. The Gryphons play West-leading Lakehead twice.
The Mustangs did get some good news on the men’s basketball front. They got a commitment from highly sought after recruit Andrew Van Camp.
In a sport where size is a highly prized commodity and not always available, Van Camp is 6-foot-8 and has spent the past two seasons at Kiski Prep in Saltsburg, Penn.
The Western/McMaster doubleheader Wednesday at Alumni Hall begins at 6 p.m.

Career day for Barbeau lifts Mustangs in OT

Story by- Mustangs Athletics

WATERLOO, Ont. – Led by a career day by Ryan Barbeau, the Western Mustangs men’s basketball team turned a 17-point third-quarter deficit on Saturday into a 105-102 overtime win over the Waterloo Warriors on the road.

BOX SCORE

Barbeau exploded for 46 points Saturday, and scored 11 of those in overtime to lead the Mustangs to an exciting win. The fifth-year senior went 14-for-30 from the floor, including 8-for-16 from three-point range for a banner day. With the win, the Western men improved to 8-12 season. The Warriors, meanwhile, fell to 5-15.

Trailing 47-30 in the third quarter, the Mustangs came all the way back to take a 65-64 lead in the fourth following a Barbeau three-pointer with 6:09 left. The lead exchanged hands throughout the rest of the quarter, and Western’s Greg Morrow made a jumper with just a tick left on the clock to tie the score at 85-85 and send the game into overtime.

After Morrow tied the score again in overtime at 94-94, Western’s Peter Scholtes nailed a three-pointer and Barbeau followed with a bucket to give the Mustangs a five-point lead with 1:23 remaining. The Warriors pulled to within a point, but Barbeau made four straight free throws down the stretch to hold off the home team and preserve the win for the Mustangs.

In addition to his 46 points, Barbeau also finished with six rebounds and a team-high eight assists. Scholtes had 15 points, though he struggled from the floor to shoot 5-for-16. The second-year forward was big on the glass, grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Morrow posted a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Quinn Henderson also had 10 rebounds for the Mustangs, who outrebounded the Warriors 53-35 overall on Saturday.

Cam McIntyre was the top scorer for Waterloo with 33 points. The guard went 9-for-18 overall and 6-for-11 from beyond the arc. Zach Angelini had 28 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Mike Wright dished out a game-high 13 assists and had 12 points to finish with a double-double.

The Warriors shot 44% overall Saturday, while Western was 43%. It was a long range game at the PAC Gym, as nearly half of all shots were three-point attempts. Waterloo finished at 45% (18-for-40) from three-point range, while Western was 30% (12-for-40).

The Mustangs (8-12) return home this Wednesday, Feb. 15, for an 8:00 p.m. game against the visiting McMaster Marauders (15-5) at Alumni Hall. For tickets, click here. That game will also be available via Live Stream at:

Mustangs men's basketball lands recruit Andrew Van Camp

Mustang Recruit Andrew Van Camp
Mustangs men's basketball lands recruit Andrew Van Camp

LONDON, Ont. -- The Western Mustangs men's basketball program is very pleased to announce the commitment of a new recruit -- 6-foot-8 Post Andrew Van Camp (Port Perry, Ont.), who has spent the past two seasons at Kiski Prep in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania.

Considered one of Canada's top big men, Van Camp is No. 29 overall in Hoopstars Canada's High School rankings. He has turned down several NCAA Division I offers to attend Western this fall.

"It’s an honour to become a student athlete at Western and I can’t wait to get started," said Van Camp, whose Kiski Cougars are currently 23-5 in the Interstate Preparatory League. "I am extremely excited to be a part of the Western Basketball program."

Mustangs head coach Brad Campbell is equally excited to welcome a player of Van Camp's calibre to the Western program.

"He is an outstanding talent, and he addresses a major need for us," Campbell said. "He will make an immediate impact on our young and developing team with his combination of size and skill. We are very excited about Andrew's commitment."

Stay tuned for more Mustangs recruiting news in the weeks to come.

Western men drop road contest to McMaster

By Mustangs Athleics

HAMILTON, Ont. – On an otherwise poor shooting night, the McMaster Marauders rode Cam Michaud’s game-high 23-point performance to a 77-63 win over the visiting Western Mustangs on Wednesday night at Burridge Gymnasium.

BOX SCORE

Sixteen of Michaud’s 23 points came in the second and third quarters, as the Marauders turned a five-point lead into an 18-point advantage en route to the victory, improving their record to 14-5 on the season. With the loss, the Mustangs fell to 7-12.

It was a sloppy contest Wednesday night, as both teams struggled from the floor and also combined for 34 turnovers. The Marauders shot 38.2% overall compared to the Mustangs’ 34.9% mark. McMaster was 6-of-24 (25%) from three-point range, while the Western men went just 3-for-24 (12.5%).

Michaud finished 9-for-16 from the floor and added six rebounds in the win. Aaron Redpath went 5-for-9 overall and 4-for-7 from three-point range for 17 points, while Victor Raso had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Satar Wahidi posted a game-high 10 rebounds and three steals.

Ryan Barbeau and Peter Scholtes both finished with 20 points for the Mustangs. But it wasn’t an enjoyable shooting night for Barbeau, who went 8-for-22 overall while going 0-for-9 from beyond the arc. The fifth-year senior finished with a game-high six assists. Scholtes went 7-for-9 from the field and added seven rebounds despite playing just 21 minutes due to foul trouble. Greg Morrow had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench for Western.

The Mustangs (7-12) will return to action this Saturday, Feb. 11, for another road game – this time against the Waterloo Warriors (4-15) at 2:00 p.m.

Western Gazette Article on Mustangs Win vs Brock

Mustangs bury Badgers with early flurry

February 8, 2012
By Wesetern Gazette

The Mustangs men’s basketball team got out to an early lead in Saturday’s game against the Brock Badgers and they never looked back. From the opening tip-off, Western controlled the flow of the game with a strong presence under the rim, leading them to an impressive 85-61 victory.
Looking to build off an important win earlier in the week against the Guelph Gryphons, the Mustangs started the game with unrivalled intensity.
“In pregame Brad [Campbell] told us just come out with energy and play hard,” Charlie Drouin, Mustangs forward, said. “Everyone on the bench came out loud, cheering everyone on, and [we] went really hard in the first minute.”
The Mustangs controlled the ball in the paint and dominated on the boards to help them go on a 12-point run to start the game. From that point on Western controlled the pace of the game, surrendering their lead only briefly in the fourth quarter when the game was tied at 57.
“I think that early lead really gave us a lot of confidence,” Brad Campbell, Mustangs head coach, explained. “It gave us a bit of a buffer and kind of let us play with the lead for the rest of the game.”
Mustangs forward Peter Scholtes dominated the inside lanes, putting up 21 points and pulling down seven boards. Guard Ryan Barbeau also put up 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds of his own. The final tally showed the Mustangs pulling down 53 rebounds, with Brock grabbing only 36.
Brock’s head coach Brad Rootes also noticed how important the inside game was to the outcome of the match.
“I mean they’re a team that’s severely undersized, and that should be an area of advantage or strength for us, and they out rebounded us by almost 20,” Rootes said.
The Badgers started the second half with a run of their own, scoring nine unanswered points and putting them back in the game. They turned up the pressure in the third quarter, switching to a full-court press for the first few minutes, which resulted in some sloppy ball handling by the Mustangs. By the end of the third quarter the Badgers were back in the game, trailing only 57-54.
However, the purple and white were able to re-establish themselves in the paint in the fourth quarter, outscoring Brock 28-7 to re-secure the lead and the win.
The Badgers were without leading scorer Jameson Tipping and starting forward Mark Gibson, which showed on the scoreboard.
“Losing both Mark Gibson and Jameson Tipping makes a big difference, but there are no excuses” Rootes said, “There’s enough talent on this team that [we] can withstand losing one or two guys. We didn’t perform, [and] we didn’t deserve to win the game.”
The Mustangs needed the win to keep their playoff chances alive.
“Hopefully we can gain some momentum and get a little bit of a late push here and put some wins together to make the playoffs,” Campbell said.
“It was huge,” Drouin said in response to the importance of the victory. “We’re chasing either Guelph or Brock right now. It’s just really good momentum going forward.”
The Mustangs currently sit in seventh in the Ontario University Athletics West division, one spot out of the playoffs with four games remaining in the regular season.

Ryan Barbeau Western GoodLife Fitness Athlete of the Week

Barbeau, a fifth-year Philosophy student, led the Mustangs in a pair of crucial wins last week as the team battles for an OUA playoff spot. During a 69-66 over the Guelph Gryphons last Wednesday (Feb. 1), Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) scored a game-high 27 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists. The 5-foot-10 guard also scored what proved to be the winning bucket with under 1:30 remaining.

On Saturday (Feb. 4), Barbeau had 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists during Western’s 85-61 win over the Brock Badgers, which put the Mustangs two points out of a playoff spot. The fifth-year senior continues to lead the OUA in scoring at 22.8 ppg, a mark that also ranks third in the country. His 35.5 minutes per game also rank first and third, respectively in the OUA and CIS.

Mustangs dominate in 85-61 victory

By Mustangs Athletics

The University of Western Ontario Mustangs scored the first points of the game at the 9:11 mark off of a Charlie Drouin layup and never gave it back on way to a dominating 85-61 victory over the visiting Brock University Badgers.
The Mustangs used hot shooting – nearly 50-percent for the game – to race out to a 17-point lead at halftime. However, Brock University slowly chipped away at the spread early in the second half and got to within four points midway through off of a layup-and-one opportunity from Didi Mukendi.
With only seconds expired in the final quarter, a 3-pointer from Tshing Kasamba would knot the game at 57 but Nathan DiLoreto's foul shot moments later would give the Mustangs the lead again and they would not look back. Ryan Barbeau's jumper at the 6:26 mark would spread the Mustang lead into double-digits.
The Mustangs were led by Barbeau and Peter Scholtes, who both provided 21 points. Scholtes has recorded seven rebounds and three steals. Greg Morrow added 12 points to the tally and pulled down nine boards.
The Mustangs will be in action again on February 8th when they tipoff at 8:00pm against McMaster.

Western men rally for win over Guelph

By Mustangs Athletics

LONDON, Ont. – Ryan Barbeau’s bucket with 1:28 remaining in the game stood up as the winner Wednesday night, as the visiting Western Mustangs beat the Guelph Gryphons 69-66 on the road.

BOX SCORE

Barbeau added an insurance basket with 21 seconds left, and the Western victory was clinched when Guelph was unable to connect on a three-pointer on the other end. With the win, the Mustangs improved their record to 6-11 on the season. The Gryphons, meanwhile, fell to 8-9.

The Gryphons jumped out to an early 16-7 lead Wednesday night, making a trio of three-pointers in the first seven minutes. But it was a close contest for the remainder of the game. The Mustangs pulled to within four after the first quarter, and went into the half trailing 42-39.

A free-throw by Barbeau with 1:40 left in the third quarter gave the Mustangs their first lead, 53-52, since early in the contest. The lead then exchanged hands six times before Barbeau put Western ahead for good.

Barbeau led all scorers Wednesday night with 27 points on 8-of-22 shooting. The fifth-year senior, who continues to lead the OUA in scoring, also added seven rebounds and seven assists. Ryan Higgins was the only other Mustang in double figures, finishing with 12 points and five rebounds.

Kareem Malcolm was the top scorer for the Gryphons, tallying 18 points on 7-of-20 shooting (though he went just 1-for-10 from three-point range). He also had nine rebounds in the contest. Zachary Angus had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Daniel McCarthy had 13 points and eight boards.

The Mustangs shot 41.1% (23-for-56) overall Wednesday night, while the Gryphons struggled to a 32.2% (19-for-59) mark. Western was 6-for-19 (31.6%) from three-point range, while Guelph was 6-for-27 (22.2%). The Gryphons outrebounded the Mustangs 43-27 overall.
