Game report from Andrew Simpson - Mustangs Athletics

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs finished their exhibition schedule with a 83-74 win against the UQAM Citadins Sunday afternoon in Alumni Hall.

UQAM stayed close for three quarters with the Mustangs but the inside presence of Adam Jespersen (16 pts, 17 reb) and Andy Wedemire (21 pts, 5 reb) was too much for the Citadins to handle. In total Western had a balanced attack with all five starters in double digits with Marcus Barnett adding 14, Ryan Barbeau 16 and Pete Scholtes having 11 points.

Western finished the preseason with a perfect 5-0 record. The Mustangs will start their regular season on the road on Nov. 5 travelling to Sudbury to face Laurentian. They will then play at York on Nov. 6 before making their home debut against Ryerson on Nov. 12. That game will be at Alumni Hall at 8 p.m.

UQAM started the game in a full-court press and used their quick, aggressive play to hang tough with the Mustangs. Western was able to break the press and led by a slim margin 22-18 after the first quarter.

The battle continued in the second quarter with both teams trading baskets throughout. After a Barbeau steal and layup and a jumper to end the half the Mustangs would have the slight advantage 41-37 at half.
The Mustangs came out stronger in the second half and a thunderous Wedemire two handed slam would extend the lead to seven at 56-49. The lead would stay at seven at the end of three quarters as Western led 63-56.

With the Citadins in foul trouble they could not mount a comeback as Western had their largest lead of the game 77-64 with four minutes remaining. Western would hold on for the victory trading foul shots to end the game 83-74.
