Wedemire's 29 points not enough as Western falls to Laurier 75-67

Report by Adele Gatto - Mustangs Athletics

LONDON, Ont. - Andrew Wedemire scored 29 points, but it was not enough as the Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the Western Mustangs 75-67 on Jan.22 at Wilfred Laurier Athletic Complex.

The Mustangs and Golden Hawks spent the majority of the first quarter tied or within two, but a series of missed scoring opportunities and multiple Mustangs turnovers resulted in Laurier taking the early 28-16 lead.

Through the second quarter Western struggled offensively and defensively as Wedemire missed four of his six scoring opportunities in the quarter. Despite this, Western was able to outscore Laurier 14-11, and with a key three-pointer by Quinn Henderson late in the second the Mustangs tightened the Laurier lead to 39-30 at half.

In the third, Western looked for a comeback, but once again a series of turnovers, missed defensive rebounds and shot opportunities held the Mustangs from taking the lead. Laurier ended the third with a 58-45 lead.

Western came out strong early in the fourth quarter as they drained five consecutive shots, tightening the Laurier lead to 60-56. They finished strong with Wedemire getting 13 of his 29 points, but it was not enough as the Mustangs fell to Laurier 75-67.

The Mustangs will rematch against the Golden Hawks in their next game on Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
