Balanced attack lifts Western over Waterloo

LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs’ men’s basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter Wednesday night, outscoring the visiting Waterloo Warriors 16-4 in the opening three minutes of the final period en route to an 81-69 win at Alumni Hall.

Ryan Barbeau scored 10 of those 16 points and tallied 12 in a row in the fourth for the Mustangs, who improved to 5-10 with the win. The Warriors, meanwhile, fell to 4-11.

Leading by just three at halftime, the Mustangs shot an even 50% (17-for-34) in the second half Wednesday night on the way to 47 points over the final two quarters.

Barbeau finished with a game-high 20 points (8-for-16 from the floor) for the Mustangs to go along with a team-high seven assists and two steals. Peter Scholtes went 7-for-12 from the floor for 19 points, while Nathan DiLoreto made four three-pointers en route to 15 points and Ryan Higgins made a pair of three-pointers and finished with 10 points.

Mike Wright was the top scorer for the Warriors, tallying 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. Andrew Melbourne had 12 points (5-for-10) and five rebounds, while Wayne Bridge had 11 points and four boards.

The Mustangs (5-10) are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 28, when they will travel to Laurier for a rematch against the No. 6 CIS-ranked Golden Hawks (13-2), who came away with an 89-73 win over Western last Saturday. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m
