No. 6 Laurier too much for Western

LONDON, Ont. – The No. 6 CIS-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks played as advertised Saturday afternoon, shooting 49.4% from the floor en route to an 89-73 win over the hometown Western Mustangs at Alumni Hall.

Ahead by just one, 37-36, at the half, the Hawks surged ahead with an offensive outburst in the third, outscoring the Mustangs 28-13 in the period to take a 16-point lead into the fourth. Patrick Donnelly did a lot of the damage in the third, scoring all 13 of his points in the quarter.

Maxwell Allin led the Hawks in scoring with 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting to go along with a game-high eight assists. Matthew Buckley had a big 21-point, 18-rebound double-double, while Donnelly managed a double-double of his own (13 points and 10 rebounds). Kyle Enright, the OUA three-point leader, knocked down a trio of treys en route to his 15 points. Kyle Harrison, who entered the day as Laurier’s leading scorer (fourth overall in the OUA) at 18.4 ppg, was held to just two points on 1-of-7 shooting.

Ryan Barbeau, the OUA’s top scorer, led the Mustangs once again on Saturday, pouring in 25 points on 8-of-18 shooting, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. The fifth-year senior added seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals in a game-high 38 minutes. Peter Scholtes, who also went 8-for-18 from the floor, finished with 20 points, while Quinn Henderson went 5-for-13 and finished with 14 points.
